Lewisham College learners are celebrating excellent results having achieved top scores for GCSEs and vocational qualifications with many progressing onto higher level study and others securing places at top universities across the UK.

Many learners received impressive grades in their GCSEs and vocational courses despite the challenges they faced completing their studies during these unprecedented times.

Asfa Sohail, Principal at Lewisham College, said: “I would like to congratulate our learners on their incredible results. We are extremely proud of them for all they have achieved and the hard work they have put in throughout the year.

“They have faced many difficulties as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and we commend their performance as learners and individuals who have grown and adapted to overcome these challenges and achieve their potential. I wish them the best of luck in their next steps.”

The proportion of GCSEs’ top grades went up to 43.8% for GCSE English and 42.3% for GCSE Maths, an increase of 6.8% for English and 3.4% for maths compared to last year’s results. Vocational courses also saw an increase in the overall pass rate with learners achieving 100% pass grades across various disciplines, including Health and Social Care, Business, IT, Sport, Performing and Production Arts, Catering, Beauty and Access courses.

They will be moving on to study Level 3 courses, while others will be joining recognised higher education institutions, including the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, the University of Nottingham and Rose Bruford College.

James Safo completed his English GCSE achieving an outstanding grade of 9. He said: “I’m so happy that all my hard work has paid off. When I first started, I found it challenging but with my teacher’s support I was able to do well in my course, now I have this grade I can move on to study Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics A-Level in preparation to study medicine at university.”

English and Mathematics GCSE learner, Danielle Goode, received excellent results in her English and Math's GCSEs achieving grades 9 and 5.

She said: “I'm thrilled with my results; these qualifications have given me the foundation and skills I need to pursue my career goals and study at university in the future. My teachers encouraged me to challenge myself and keep working hard, I couldn’t have achieved these results without their support.”

Learners studying A-Levels, vocational Level 3 and BTEC courses received impressive results, with some achieving Triple Distinctions (D*D*D*).
IT learner, Szilvester-Sandor Osan achieved a Triple Distinction and has secured a place at Goldsmiths University.
