Lewisham College welcomed democracy onto campus by hosting polling stations for the Young Mayor of Lewisham elections. The initiative gave learners the opportunity to take part in the election during the college day and have their voices heard on issues that matter to them.

Learners were able to cast their votes on site, with Lewisham College learner and Young Mayor candidate Ryley Dragwidge present throughout the day. Ryley spoke with fellow learners, shared his journey so far and encouraged them to engage in the democratic process. He was joined by supporters as he answered questions, discussed his campaign priorities and highlighted the importance of young people being involved in decisions that shape their communities.

Ryley’s campaign is rooted in advocacy, inclusion and protecting vulnerable young people across the borough. His manifesto focuses on removing barriers for young people with disabilities, tackling knife crime, and strengthening education and support around mental health and substance abuse.

Speaking about his vision for Lewisham, Ryley said:

“My campaign is centred on protecting the most vulnerable among us. Young people with disabilities are often overlooked and face unnecessary barriers, so my plan is to amplify their voices, ensure all schools and services are fully accessible, and provide the support they need to thrive, not just survive. We must guarantee equal opportunity for every student.

“Knife crime in Lewisham needs to be stopped, with too many lives lost and families suffering. I want to see more knife bins across Lewisham and create safe spaces where young people can hand over weapons without judgement. This isn’t just about crime; it’s about protecting vulnerable young lives. I will make sure there is better education, stronger mental health support and more positive outlets for young people.”

It was inspiring to see so many learners getting involved, confidently using their voices and taking part in a real democratic process at Lewisham College.

We wish Ryley the very best in the Young Mayor of Lewisham elections and are proud to support one of our learners standing up to represent the voices of young people across the borough.
