Lewisham College recently hosted its Annual Maths Competition, an event that celebrates talent, determination, and the power of mathematical thinking. This year, 285 students entered the competition, demonstrating the wide-reaching enthusiasm for maths across the college.

The competition tested a variety of skills, with questions covering Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, and Probability. Students from courses including Elective Home Education, Business, Digital and Creative, ESOL Young, and ESOL Adult were shortlisted as finalists, reflecting the breadth of talent across the College.

The event itself was a celebration of learning, with staff and students attending to cheer on participants and enjoy seeing the competition unfold in real time. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to come together, share their knowledge, and be inspired by one another’s achievements.

We are proud to announce the winners of the 2025/26 Maths Competition:

  • Winner: Yacob Alam
  • 1st Runner-up: Feryal Altintas
  • 2nd Runner-up: Maria Delgado

The competition is more than just a test of mathematical skill, it is an opportunity for learners to see the relevance of maths in real life, education, and future careers. Strong mathematical skills are essential for success in employment, apprenticeships, and progression to higher education. They also help learners build confidence, problem-solving abilities, and personal effectiveness, all of which are vital for achieving social mobility and personal growth.

Events like this show that maths can be exciting, challenging, and rewarding. For many students, participating in the competition has inspired them to continue developing their skills, knowing that maths can open doors to new opportunities and career paths.

Congratulations to all learners who participated and made this year’s Maths Competition a resounding success.
