Lewisham College proudly celebrated Black History Month with a vibrant week-long programme of events, bringing learners and staff together to honour Black heritage, amplify diverse voices, and explore the cultural richness that shapes our community.

The week began with a thought-provoking panel discussion led by college leaders titled “What Does Black History Month Mean Today?”, the session invited learners to reflect on the relevance of Black history in contemporary Britain and share their perspectives on identity, representation, and progress.

Tuesday’s event featured powerful guest speakers Dwane Isaac and Fumy Opeyemi, who shared personal stories of resilience, activism, and belonging. Their insights sparked dialogue around race, upbringing, and social justice.

Creativity took centre stage with an ESOL art workshop titled “To Be Making History.” Learners collaborated to design a college mural that celebrates Black history and raises awareness of UK culture. The hands-on session gave learners a chance to express themselves artistically while contributing to a lasting visual legacy on campus.

Thursday’s highlight was a screening of “Roots, Reggae, Rebellion,” a documentary presented by rapper and political commentator Akala. The film explored the intersection of music, politics, and Black identity, prompting deep reflection among attendees on the role of cultural expression in resistance and empowerment.

The week concluded with a joyful celebration of UK Black music and culture. Learners gathered for a lively mix of music and quizzes, ending the week on a high note with laughter, connection, and pride.

Current learner, Asuma Jalloh Jalloh said: “These events help raise awareness and celebrate Black excellence. Our history shows how far we’ve come — we deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated.”

Throughout the week, the college embraced the national theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” creating spaces for education, creativity, and community. The events reflected Lewisham College’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, equity, and learner voice—not just during October, but all year round.
