Lewisham College is proud to announce that ESOL student Shukria Wisa has been highly commended for the Learning for Personal Progression Award at the Mayor of London’s Adult Learning Awards 2025.

These prestigious awards celebrate exceptional adult learners from across the capital—individuals who have overcome challenges, developed new skills, and seized opportunities to transform their futures. The Learning for Personal Progression Award specifically honours those who have shown remarkable personal growth through education. Shukria’s recognition is a powerful testament to her determination, resilience, and commitment to learning.

This year’s ceremony brought together learners, educators, employers, and community organisations to champion the vital role of adult education in London. Hosted by Jimmy McLoughlin OBE, the event highlighted inspiring stories that reflect the Mayor’s ongoing commitment to ensuring accessible, high-quality learning opportunities for every Londoner.

Reflecting on her journey, Shukria Wisa, said: “In Afghanistan, I was not allowed to go to school, and neither were my daughters. Coming to the UK gave me a second chance at education. Learning to read, write, and speak English at Lewisham College has changed my life and helped me feel confident. Even when I was unwell, I knew I wanted to return to my studies. I feel proud of what I’ve achieved—passing my exams, winning the Spelling Bee, and showing my children that education is worth everything. My goal is to keep going, keep learning, and build a better life for my family here.”

Host Jimmy McLoughlin OBE added: “Congratulations to all this year's winners and nominees. It’s been a real privilege to host the Mayor of London Adult Learning Awards and celebrate the impact of lifelong learning. I regularly speak with businesses and entrepreneurs about the jobs of the future through my podcast, Jimmy’s Jobs of the Future, and it’s inspiring to see how training is helping Londoners prepare for a changing labour market while giving businesses the skilled people they need to thrive.”

Jamie Stevenson, Principal at Lewisham College, said: “We are absolutely delighted for Shukria and the recognition she has received. Her journey exemplifies the dedication and resilience that adult learners demonstrate and reflects the core mission of Lewisham College to empower individuals to build confidence, acquire new skills, and achieve their ambitions. This commendation is thoroughly deserved, and we are immensely proud of all that Shukria has accomplished.”

Lewisham College extends its warmest congratulations to Shukria on this outstanding achievement. Her success is an inspiration to learners across our community.
