As part of its Black History Month celebrations, Lewisham College welcomed Dr Nathaniel Peat, DHumLitt, MSc, BEng (Hons), for an engaging session with the learners.

Learners and staff had the opportunity to hear first-hand about Dr Peat's educational journey, lived experiences and career achievements. Throughout the session, he shared insights into overcoming challenges, embracing opportunities and developing the mindset needed to work towards personal and professional goals.

The event encouraged learners to think about their own aspirations and futures, with attendees engaging in discussions and asking questions about success, determination and discovering their purpose.

One of the key themes was the importance of self-belief. Through positive affirmations including “I am brave, I am strong, I am a leader,” learners were encouraged to recognise their own strengths and potential, helping them consider how confidence and resilience can support their education and future ambitions.

The session also explored communication and work readiness. By encouraging learners to introduce themselves with confidence, communicate effectively and step outside their comfort zones, Dr Peat shared practical advice that learners could apply to their education and future careers.

From aspiring doctors and pilots to entrepreneurs, financial advisers and future leaders across a range of industries, learners reflected on their ambitions and the steps they could take towards achieving their goals.

The visit formed part of Lewisham College's wider Black History Month programme, providing an opportunity for learners to hear from different voices, explore personal aspirations and build confidence for the future. Previous College Black History Month activity has similarly created opportunities for learners to engage with themes including Black heritage, identity, representation and progress.

Lewisham College extends its thanks to Dr Nathaniel Peat for sharing his experiences and advice with learners and encouraging them to recognise their potential, aim high and take positive steps towards their future.
