Lewisham College proudly partnered with Forterra to host the prestigious annual Bricklaying Apprentice Challenge at its specialised Deptford Bridge campus. The event brought together 15 London-based apprentice bricklayers tasked with displaying their skills by constructing walls using a standard header bond.   

A selection of challenges tested the apprentices' practical skills, time management and ability to fulfil a brief. What set this challenge apart was the requirement for participants to incorporate a specific feature into their walls, allowing them to demonstrate their precision and creativity using Forterra's donated iconic London Bricks.   

This competition was a vibrant display of emerging talent in the construction industry. A shared sense of purpose characterised the challenge as participants worked tirelessly to bring their designs to life. The air was thick with determination as these aspiring bricklayers meticulously pieced together their visions, brick by brick.  

Rocco Reynolds-Black, a first-year apprentice at Lewisham College currently working at Flahive Brickwork, won first place in the competition. He said, "Initially, I felt quite nervous to participate, but once I got started with the challenge, I was fully engaged. I am proud to have secured first place and am excited about what will come next. Here is to many more successes in the future, with the Guild of Bricklayers next!"
