Jamie Stevenson, Principal of Lewisham College, has joined education leaders from across the capital at a London Adult Skills Summit, reinforcing the College’s commitment to championing adult learning in Lewisham and beyond.

The event brought together representatives from adult colleges across the capital alongside key stakeholders from the Greater London Authority, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the Association of CollegesUCU and HOLEX, the national membership body for adult community education.

The summit brought together principals of adult education colleges, sector organisations and policy stakeholders to discuss the growing challenges facing adult skills provision, including rising demand and continued funding pressures. Hosted at WM College, one of the UK’s oldest adult education institutions, the event provided a platform for leaders to share insight and raise collective concerns about the future of adult learning in London.

Jamie Stevenson attended the summit on behalf of Lewisham College, part of NCG to advocate for the importance of accessible, high-quality adult education that supports local residents into employment, progression and further study.

Speaking at the event, Jamie said: “Adult learning is a lifeline for so many in Lewisham and beyond; it opens doors to new careers, strengthens our communities, and transforms lives. Colleges like ours must be supported to meet growing demand and provide every learner with real sustainable opportunities. Improved funding and recognition of adult education is essential to achieving this.”

Discussions at the summit also focused on recent changes to national funding arrangements for adult skills and the impact this is having on colleges. Sector leaders highlighted the need for sustainable investment to ensure adult learners are not left behind.

The event concluded with a shared commitment to raise the profile of adult learning and make the case for sustainable investment. Closing the summit, Gerry McDonald CBE said: “The level of optimism in the room is encouraging. Today is the start of a new movement – to change the dynamic and landscape of adult learning.”

By taking part in the summit, Lewisham College reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with partners across London to champion adult education and protect opportunities for adult learners in the borough and beyond remained accessible and valued.
