Lewisham College has officially launched its Black History Month programme, bringing students and staff together to celebrate culture, community and the contributions of Black communities throughout history and contemporary society.

The month began with a vibrant steel pan performance as students arrived on campus, creating a welcoming atmosphere and setting the tone for a programme of events focused on learning, reflection and celebration. Staff and students also attended a College Leaders Panel, which provided an opportunity to hear from Black colleagues across the College, sharing their experiences, career journeys and perspectives.

Black History Month at Lewisham College will feature a diverse programme of activities designed to educate, inspire and encourage meaningful conversations. Throughout October, students will have opportunities to engage with guest speakers, workshops, exhibitions and panel discussions exploring Black history, culture, achievement and community impact.

Highlights of this year's programme include:

  • Guest Speaker: Nathaniel Peat - Award-winning British-Jamaican entrepreneur, engineer, pilot, martial artist and CEO, sharing insights from his personal and professional journey.
  • Black History Through the Years Exhibition - An exhibition in the Learning Centre celebrating the achievements, stories and contributions of Black communities.
  • Calabash Coffee Mornings - Opportunities for students and staff to hear from Caribbean Windrush Elders, who will share their experiences and reflections while enjoying refreshments prepared by Lewisham College Catering learners.
  • Spoken Word Workshops - Creative sessions delivered by Poetic Justice, encouraging learners to express themselves through poetry and performance.
  • Black History Month Male and Female Panels - Discussions featuring alumni and external guests, providing students with valuable role models and opportunities to explore a range of perspectives and experiences.

The programme reflects Lewisham College's commitment to creating an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated, different voices are heard and learners can engage with issues that shape our local and global communities.

Through events, discussions and shared experiences, Black History Month provides an opportunity for students and staff to come together, learn from one another and recognise the significant contributions Black individuals and communities have made across society.

We look forward to a month of learning, reflection and celebration across Lewisham College.
