Lewisham College welcomed back learners for a special awards ceremony to celebrate the success of learners who have secured places in Russell Group universities, including Queen Mary University College, Leeds University, and Kings College London as well as Goldsmiths, London South Bank and Greenwich University to study a range of subjects such as IT and Computing, Nursing, Psychology, Creative Writing and Social and Political Science.

As part of the event, staff and learners gathered to show appreciation for all the support received at Lewisham College. They also shared good luck messages as learners embark on the next step in their education. The event was also an opportunity for the College’s community to recognise their hard work, dedication and resilience and celebrate achievements.

Nana Boahene joined Lewisham College to study BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Information Technology. He has completed his course and secured a place at Goldsmiths to study Computer Science.

Hawa Honnel, BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Information Technology learner, won a £10,000 Sony PlayStation Scholarship to study Computing at the University of Westminster. She said: “When I started my studies at Lewisham College, my English was not very good, and I needed more qualifications before I could even think about university, so I started with a Level 1 course in IT. The staff at the College were very supportive and helped me to improve my skills and gain confidence to progress onto the Level 3 course.

“I never thought I could go to university, but my teachers encouraged me to consider this option for my next step. When I decided to apply for a course, the College helped me find the right university for me and write my personal statement. The encouragement from staff motivated me to apply, and I am very thankful for all the support I received.”

Gerard Garvey, Principal at Lewisham College, said: “We are incredibly pleased for our learners who are progressing to university. It is a magnificent achievement, and we are truly proud of them as they take their next steps into higher education.

“Seeing our learners progress after successfully completing their studies with us makes us extremely proud. They have a lot to look forward to over the coming years. We are committed to preparing all learners for their next steps and we are confident that they will continue to achieve remarkable things. We hope that this is not goodbye forever and hope to welcome them back in the future to celebrate their continued success.”

Lewisham College provides UCAS workshops to support students with the application process and help them choose the right course for them.
