This course is designed for school leavers aged 16 to 24 with moderate learning disabilities who are working at Entry Level 1 to Entry Level 3.
As part of the colleges Move Into portfolio, the programme supports learners as they transition from school to college, helping them build confidence, independence and communication skills within a structured and supportive environment.
The course offers a broad and balanced introduction to college life, giving learners the opportunity to explore a range of subjects while developing practical, personal and social skills. Entry Requirements
To join this course, learners must be aged between 16 and 24 and have an Education, Health and Care Plan.
No previous qualifications or work experience are required. Before an application can be progressed, the Supported Learning department requires a consultation with the local authority to ensure the course is suitable for the learners individual needs.
This process is usually supported by the SENCO at the learners current school, who can help arrange the consultation and provide guidance.
Assessment Method
Learners are assessed through continuous assessment throughout the academic year.
Progress is measured through day-to-day learning activities, practical tasks and participation rather than formal examinations, allowing learners to demonstrate progress in a supportive and flexible way.
Most learners work towards Functional Skills English and maths and may complete assessments when they are ready and appropriately supported.
Aims of the course
The aim of this course is to help learners settle confidently into college life while developing greater independence, communication and everyday life skills.
Learners explore a range of curriculum areas, including English and maths, social skills and community-based learning, helping them build confidence and develop skills for daily life.
The programme includes termly subject rotations, allowing learners to experience different vocational and creative areas such as catering, art and design, performing arts, music technology, construction and personal planning.
Learners also take part in life skills, sport and fitness activities, as well as small group sessions designed to support personal development, confidence and emotional wellbeing.
Work experience placements are included to help learners begin to understand the world of work and explore possible future pathways.
Progression Opportunities
After completing the course, learners typically progress onto vocational or Supported Learning courses within the college.
Progression options may include areas such as catering, art and design, digital skills, construction or performance-based courses, depending on the learners interests, abilities and readiness to specialise.
The course provides an important foundation for further learning, independence and future work-related opportunities.
Facilities
Teaching takes place at Lewisham College within the Supported Learning department.
Learning is delivered through a combination of classroom-based lessons, practical workshops and community activities, giving learners the opportunity to develop skills in a range of different environments.
Each group is supported by a course tutor and a Learning Support Worker, with access to additional specialist support services including Speech and Language Therapists, safeguarding and behaviour specialists.
The department also provides sensory and quiet spaces to support individual needs and wellbeing.
Career Options
On completion of the course, learners may continue developing work-related skills through further study, supported employment or volunteering opportunities.
The Supported Learning job coach team works closely with learners to identify suitable placements and progression routes based on their individual needs, interests and long-term goals.
Further training or support may be needed depending on the chosen pathway and future ambitions.
