The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Specialist Techniques is a vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed beauty therapist. This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading professional bodies (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) and the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT)) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior beautician/beauty specialist.
In parallel to the core beauty units, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, team working and research skills will also be developed.
You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT. You will also attain certificates to add to your CV for enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular to the Hair and Beauty industry. You will also study functional skills or GCSE's in English and maths.

Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs (must include English) at grades A-D/3 and above.
You will meet with staff to discuss if this course is suitable for you and you may complete an initial assessment that indicates an appropriate level of English ability.
Assessment Method
You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. You will produce a service/treatment portfolio that includes evidence of practical services carried out with proficiency to prepare you for employment in the beauty industry.
There are three areas of assessment:
- Practical assessment (Observation).
- Exams to assess underpinning knowledge of the skills.
- Assignments (written) and oral questioning/professional discussion.
- Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years.
Aims of the course
To introduce you to a range of professional skills and the underpinning knowledge required to enter into this versatile and prosperous industry. Techniques delivered in this course relate to all aspects of beauty including manicures, pedicures, waxing, eyelash/brow tinting and enhancement, facial and skincare, make-up, retail skills, health & safety, salon reception, product knowledge and customer service.
Progression Opportunities
Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become members of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). As a beauty therapist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
- commercial salons.
- destination/day spas.
- independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings.
- Care homes
Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in one or more of the following areas:
- Level 3 beauty therapy.
- Level 3 holistic therapies.
- sports therapy.
Facilities
Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using tools and products recognised in the industry. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients that book in to visit the T'ien salon on site.
There will be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, and there will be competition work.
