The qualification will fully prepare you to work effectively as an advanced hairdresser/stylist. You will learn advanced cutting styling and colouring techniques while also gaining knowledge of health and safety client consultation and how to sell products and services to clients.

    Entry Requirements

    • Four GCSEs (must include English) at grade A*-C/9-4- Level 2 qualification in a relevant vocational area (essential) You will meet with staff to discuss whether this course is suitable for you and we'll ask you to complete a free writing task to demonstrate an appropriate level of English ability. You may also be asked to perform a trade test.

    Assessment Method

    There are three methods of assessment: practical observation (where you demonstrate your skills on clients) oral (where you answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skills); written (where you carry out independent research and complete an assignment and online exams). During the course you will build an e-portfolio of work and you'll receive training on how to use the latest technology to manage this. The programme is unit based and you will be assessed when you feel you are competent.

    Aims of the course

    To build on existing knowledge and understanding of hairdressing and help you develop an enhanced repertoire of technical skills to prepare you for employment as a senior hairdresser/stylist.

    Progression Opportunities

    While the main purpose of this qualification is to prepare you for employment as a senior hairdresser/stylist you may choose to further develop your knowledge and skills by taking an advanced specialist qualifications at Level 4 such as VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Salon Management; VTCT Level 4 Diploma in Salon Management VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Specialist Hair and Scalp Services VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Hair Colour Correction or VTCT Level 4 Award in Advanced Hair Styling.

    Facilities

    Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using industry-recognised tools and products in our fully equipped salon. Our skilled teaching staff will utilise technology such as iPads and television viewing screens to support practical learning enabling you to view demonstrations and close-up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients at our T'ien salon on campus.

    Career Options

    You will be qualified as an advanced hairdresser/stylist with job opportunities across a wide range of settings including commercial salons; specialist African type hair salons; television film theatre and media or hospitals/care homes. You could also to choose to work in product manufacturing and training or to work in an independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based setting.
