This course is a technical certificate qualification which will prepare you to work as an employed or self-employed junior hairdresser/hair stylist. Through this qualification you will develop the knowledge understanding and skills to consult with clients and provide a range of basic cutting colouring and lightening services. You will also study setting dressing blow-drying and styling hair with electrical equipment and develop your knowledge of relevant anatomy and physiology. At the same time you'll acquire knowledge of health & safety retail commercial and product knowledge improve your communication and customer service skills and broaden your awareness of sustainability issues all of which are highly valued by employers. Throughout the course you'll have opportunities to improve your problem solving and research skills. You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT and also add to your CV by attaining certificates from enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular in the hair and beauty industry. You will also study functional skills or GCSEs in English and maths.

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements are four GCSEs (must include English) at grade A*-D/9-3 Level 1 qualification in a relevant vocational area (desirable but not essential) you will meet with staff to discuss whether this course is suitable for you and we will ask you to complete a free writing task to demonstrate an appropriate level of English ability. You may also be asked to perform a trade test.
Assessment Method
You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work which includes evidence of practical service throughout the year. There are three areas of assessment: graded practical assessment (pass merit or distinction); exams to assess your underpinning knowledge of the skills; and a graded synoptic assessment where you will be observed carrying out a range of services from across all the mandatory units. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years.

Progression Opportunities
While the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment you might decide to specialise by taking a level 3 qualification such as VTCT Level 3 diploma in Hairdressing VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering or a qualification in salon management hair colour correction specialist hair and scalp services and/or advanced hair styling.
Facilities
Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using industry-recognised tools and products in our fully equipped salon. Our skilled teaching staff will utilise technology such as iPads and television viewing screens to support practical learning enabling you to view demonstrations and close-up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients at our T'ien salon on campus. There will also be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies as well as competition work. In order to attend this course and achieve your qualification you will be required to purchase uniform and a special kit. Further information on this will be provided at your interview. Career Options
Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Hairdresser (SRH) with The Hairdressing Council. As a junior hairdresser/hairstylist you could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts such as commercial salons specialist salons independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings cruise liners hospitals/care homes or choose to go into product manufacturing and training.
