Hair & Beauty

This Level 1 Certificate in Introduction to the Beauty Sector is designed for students aged 16 to 18 who are interested in the beauty industry and want to start developing practical skills while continuing their education. It is suitable for those with little or no previous experience. The course introduces you to working in a salon environment and helps you build basic practical skills such as skincare, hand and nail treatments, and simple make-up application. You will also learn about professional behaviour, client care and how a salon operates. This course forms part of a full study programme, which may include English and maths where needed, along with support to develop your personal and employability skills.

  • Entry Requirements, Units, Assessment and more...

    Entry Requirements

To join this course, you should have a genuine interest in beauty and be willing to learn in a practical, hands-on environment. You will need to demonstrate good communication skills and an ability to follow instructions. Basic hand–eye coordination is important for carrying out practical tasks. Before enrolling, you will be invited to attend an informal discussion with a tutor to make sure the course is suitable for you. You should be working at around Level 1 in English and Entry Level 3 in maths, or be prepared to work towards these alongside your course if required.

    Assessment Method

Assessment on this course is practical and continuous, allowing you to build your skills gradually and gain confidence. Tutors will observe you completing basic beauty tasks in a salon or training environment, assessing your technique, hygiene, communication and professionalism. You will also complete a portfolio of work to show your progress. This may include written tasks, worksheets and photographs of your practical work. Tutors will ask questions during or after activities to check your understanding of key topics such as health and safety, salon routines and client care. You will also be assessed on your professional behaviour, including attendance, punctuality, teamwork and your ability to respond to feedback. If you are studying English or maths as part of your programme, these will be assessed separately.

    Aims of the course

The aim of this course is to introduce you to the beauty industry and help you develop the basic practical skills and knowledge needed to progress further. You will learn how to work safely and professionally in a salon environment while building confidence in your abilities. The course also focuses on developing your communication skills, teamwork and personal organisation, helping you prepare for further study or training. It encourages a positive approach to learning, including good attendance, timekeeping and personal presentation.

    Progression Opportunities

After successfully completing this course, you can progress to a Level 2 qualification in Beauty Therapy. This is the next step for developing more advanced skills and working towards a career in the industry. Depending on your progress and readiness, you may also consider moving into an apprenticeship in the future. The course will help you build the confidence and employability skills needed for your next step.

    Facilities

You will study at Lewisham College and learn in a realistic salon environment using professional equipment. This helps you understand industry standards and prepares you for working with clients in the future. Teaching takes place through a combination of practical sessions, classroom-based learning and tutor demonstrations. You will have opportunities to practise your skills in a safe and supportive setting before progressing further.

    Career Options

This course is the first step towards a career in the beauty industry. After completing Level 1, you will need to continue to Level 2 and beyond to access skilled roles. With further training, possible career paths include working as a beauty therapist, salon assistant or in a retail role within the beauty sector. With additional experience and qualifications, you could progress into more senior roles such as a salon supervisor or manager, or work on a self-employed basis.
