Construction and Engineering

This course covers the installation of dedicated conductive charging equipment for the charging of pure electric and plug-in hybrid electric road vehicles (PHEV) and includes the extended range of electric vehicles (E-REV). It also covers the installation of both AC and DC charging equipment intended for plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) complying with general requirements for EV conductive charging systems (BS EN 61851) and the Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment.

    Entry Requirements

    Candidates must already hold one of the following qualifications: a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings Structures and the Environment) a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance) a Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification a Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker or a Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification.

    Assessment Method

    Learners will be assessed through an online multiple-choice test and a practical assignment.

    Aims of the course

    The purpose of this course is to prepare learners with the knowledge and skills to be able to install domestic electric vehicle charger units. Focusing on understanding the key requirements relating to electric vehicle charging equipment including types of equipment. It also includes how to design an installation inspect test commission and maintain installations.

    Progression Opportunities

    The government's commitment to ending the sale of all conventional petrol and diesel cars by 2040 has seen over 780 000 plug-in hybrid or pure electric cars on UK roads. As a result the UK needs a reliable and extensive charging infrastructure serviced by suitably trained installers.

    Facilities

    The practical theory and assessment for this course is delivered in purpose-built training workshops at the Green Skills and Renewable Centre in Lewisham Way Campus. Facilities are designed to equip learners with the practical skills and knowledge needed to effectively implement these sustainable technologies.

    This course is designed for qualified electricians looking to progress into the growing electric vehicle installation and service market.
