Art & Design

Are you keen and have the interest in pursuing a career in arts and design? The Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design will provide you with an introduction to art and design enabling you to both re-engage with education and acquire the requisite knowledge skills and understanding to progress to further education or employment in the creative industries. The UAL Level 2 Award and Diploma in Art and Design has been developed to provide students with an interest in art and design with the opportunity to explore the materials methods and processes that support art and design activities and to begin to develop some related technical skills. The course consists of 8 units which give students the opportunity to experiment with a range of 2D and 3D art processes including drawing painting printmaking sculpture 3D design and time-based media before embarking on a final major project. During the course students will have work experience opportunities and enrichment trips. On completion of the course students are awarded a Pass Merit or Distinction. Learners may wish to find employment in the creative industries or further their study on a Level 3 course.

    Entry Requirements

    • 4 GCSE qualifications at grades A*-D or 9-3 or a Level 1 qualification in a relevant subject. - Previous study in a creative subject or a strong interest in Art and Design. Additional information: A portfolio of work is to be shown at interview. You will have a review of your portfolio and ideally show some moderate success in the subject area. If you are accepted onto this course without a Grade 4 (that's the old Grade C) or above in Maths and/or English you will be given the opportunity to develop your skills in these subjects. This will be a compulsory part of your timetable.

    Assessment Method

    You will be assessed by a combination of assignments course work observation of practical workshops and a final project.

    Aims of the course

    This exciting and innovative course will help you to develop a range of creative art skills. The Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design is designed to provide you with an opportunity to explore develop and test your creativity. This course will provide you with a sound base of skills and knowledge enhance self-confidence and an understanding of the career demands and opportunities within art and design. You will get the opportunity to explore the materials methods and processes that support art and design activities. This course is designed to develop your knowledge technical skills and understanding for a rewarding career in a number of creative roles. The course helps you to develop more than just your creativity and expression and artistic skills you will also gain a deeper understanding of the theories and principles of art and design including research methodology expression of thought justification of concept and evaluation of product. Learning will be through practical activities and project. You will be encouraged to explore experiment and to experience a wide range of art and design methods to develop creativity and professional approach to learning. Activities may include painting drawing illustration model making sculpture and printmaking.

    Progression Opportunities

    Successful learners will be equipped to either enter a number of art and design-based roles. These could include product designer illustrator sculptor sketch artist digital designer architect 3D model maker animator independent artist painter interior decorator print designer and fashion branding roles. After successfully passing the Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design (Fine Art) you may wish to consider one of the following Level 3 courses: - Level 3 Diploma in Creative Practice: Art Design and Communication (UAL) - Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design (Fine Art) (UAL) - Level 3 Diploma in Production Art (UAL) - Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design (UAL)

    To offer the best experience to you we have assembled a team of industry-trained expert tutors and professional technical staff who have lifelong industry knowledge and experience. Our courses are delivered in spacious state-of-the-art studios enjoying natural daylight from the adjoining Tressiliian road offering excellent inspiring views of Lewisham way. We have a huge 90-seat theatre spacious dance and technical theatre studios rehearsal rooms computer editing suites recording studios and digital and traditional black and white photography developing dark rooms. In addition you will participate in regular visits to galleries and museums and will receive the chance to exhibit your work at our exciting end-of-year show. All students are encouraged to develop a strong portfolio to enable them to progress to a higher-level course or job.

As a trained artist or designer you'll be starting on a career path with loads of opportunity for progression and a good salary in your sights. For example: Artists start on around 16 000 a year and can earn 20 000 with 3-5 years' experience Graphic designers start on around 21 000 a year and can earn 28 000 with 3-5 years' experience If you're interested in a career in the art and design industry we offer a diverse range of vocational courses that will help you get where you want to go. Aimed at training students in their chosen discipline our courses include valuable work experience opportunities and the chance to exhibit your work preparing you for your first role in the industry. This course gives you the potential opportunity to enter employment within a wide range of the creative arts sector.
