College of Sanctuary

Lewisham College is proud to be part of the College of Sanctuary network, a UK-wide movement working to create a more welcoming and inclusive society. The initiative promotes understanding of the experiences of people seeking sanctuary, including refugees, asylum seekers and others affected by forced migration, while recognising the valuable contributions they make to our communities.

Our Commitment

As a College of Sanctuary, we are committed to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where every learner feels respected and valued, regardless of their background or immigration status.

We will:

  • Ensure staff are trained and informed about the experiences and rights of people with different migration statuses, including refugees, asylum seekers and those with temporary or uncertain immigration status.
  • Create a safe and supportive environment where all learners feel respected, regardless of their background or legal status.
  • Identify and reduce barriers to accessing education, participation and progression.
  • Support learners navigating complex systems, including funding eligibility, legal rights, housing and wellbeing.
  • Champion equality and fairness so that no learner is disadvantaged because of their migration status

We are also committed to centring student voice, particularly those with lived experience of migration. Learners will have opportunities to share their experiences safely and contribute to, or lead, sanctuary-related activities across the college.

Understanding the Experiences of Learners Seeking Sanctuary

Learners seeking sanctuary may have a range of immigration statuses, including:

  • Refugee status
  • Asylum seeker status
  • Humanitarian protection or limited leave to remain
  • Uncertain or changing immigration status

We understand that these experiences can bring additional challenges, including disruption to education, language barriers, financial hardship, uncertainty around funding, and the emotional and psychological impact of displacement.

At Lewisham College, we respond with compassion, flexibility and tailored support to help every learner achieve their potential.

We actively:

  • Raise awareness of forced migration across our college community
  • Challenge myths and misconceptions
  • Celebrate the resilience and contributions of people seeking sanctuary
  • Promote a culture of respect, empathy and belonging
