Budding writers got an insight into what goes into writing a successful book when author Beverly Ramsay made a special visit to Lewisham College on 1 November.

Beverly’s book, ‘A Jamaican Childhood’ is a collection of stories which paint a vivid and often funny picture of an idyllic life growing up in Jamaica in the 1950s and early 1960s.

During her visit to the College, which marked the end of Black History Month, Beverly joined students in Lewisham Way Learning Centre. She shared some of her experiences which inspired the stories in her book, and talked about her creative process, the role of the imagination, and how she came to be a published author.

Beverly provided an insight into exactly what inspired her: “I created the book for three reasons. The first, it was on my bucket list. The second, I wanted to project the rightful image of Jamaica and the great childhood memories the island left me with – it’s just like any other community – families, friends and school made it was it was. Lastly, I created the book as I wanted to get families of the Windrush generation talking about their experiences, which it has done.”

Born in Jamaica in 1952, Beverly has lived in south London for most of her life and worked as a teacher for over three decades before retiring and focusing on writing.

Patricia Forrest, Head of Learning Technology said: “It was great to be able to talk to Beverly about where she got her inspiration for her wonderful book and how she managed to evoke the scenery, people and places she describes in such a realistic way. The students got such a lot from the visit, and it’s a great end to a month of celebrations and events at the College.”
