This qualification introduces learners to the sport and active leisure sector. You will learn about your own fitness and how the body works through participation in a variety of fitness activities, and by planning and using your own fitness programme. You will also learn about rights and responsibilities at work, together with health and safety. Learners will have the chance to explore different job opportunities in sport and active leisure, and choose units relating to the areas that most appeal to them, such as assisting an activity leader or preparing physical activities for children. The course caters for differences in ability by allowing you to select some units at Entry Level (3) or Level 2, as well as Level 1.

The topics you will cover include:

  • Functions of the skeletal, muscular and cardio-respiratory systems
  • Requirements of a healthy diet
  • Different exercise and fitness activities and facilities
  • The workplace: risks and hazards, employee rights and responsibilities

You will also develop a range of skills including reviewing your own performance when taking part in sport; planning and preparing physical activities for children; planning, using and reviewing your own fitness programme; assisting in planning and delivery a sports activity; and setting goals for a work placement.

    Entry Requirements

    • Reasonable level of English - both written and spoken.
    • Sporting ability and willingness to take part

    Assessment Method

    The course in unit-based and you will be assessed at the end of each unit.

    Aims of the course

    To enable you to make an informed choice about progression onto higher level qualifications and/or employment in the sector.

    Progression Opportunities

    Learners may progress to level 2 education, including level 2 diplomas in sport, or the gym pathway.


    Classroom lessons are mainly based at our Lewisham Campus, while practical sessions are delivered at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, where we have use of a huge range of high quality facilities including sports halls, astro-turf pitches, indoor and outdoor running tracks, swimming pools, and beach volleyball, squash and tennis courts.

    Career Options

    The course gives a strong grounding in the many areas of the active leisure industry, preparing you to work in roles as diverse as coach, PE teacher, sports scientist, sports administrator, or sports development officer.
