The Level 3 National Extended Diploma in a Health and Social Care is a 2-year full- time study vocational programme. It is an in-depth study of the health and social care sector. It supports progression to health and social care related degree training employment or an apprenticeship. The qualification is an equivalent in size to three A Levels. 13 units of which 8 are Mandatory and 4 are external. This qualification attracts UCAS points. You will be expected to complete 100 hours work placement each year.

Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs (must include English Maths and Science if you are planning to go into Midwifery or Nursing ) at grades 9-4. You will meet with staff to discuss if this course is suitable for you and you may complete an initial assessment that indicates an appropriate level of English ability.
Assessment Method
- You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. - Practical assessment (Observation). - Exams to assess underpinning knowledge of the skills. - Assignments (written) reports and essays and oral questioning/professional discussion. - Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years.
Aims of the course
- To provide transferable knowledge and skills for higher education. For example transferable knowledge and skills that prepare learners for progression to university. The transferable skills that universities value include: - The ability to learn independently - The ability to research actively and methodically - Being able to give presentations and being active group members. In addition learners can also benefit from opportunities for deep learning where they are able to make connections among units and select areas of interest for detailed study. The qualification also provides a vocational context in which learners can develop the knowledge and skills required for particular degree courses including: - Reading technical texts - Effective writing - Analytical skills - Preparation for assessment methods used in degrees. 2. To Provide employability skills. For example there are opportunities during the teaching and learning phase to give learners practice in developing employability skills in the following three main categories: - Cognitive and problem-solving skills: use critical thinking approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions use systems and technology - Intrapersonal skills: communicating working collaboratively negotiating and influencing self-presentation - Interpersonal skills: self-management adaptability and resilience self-monitoring and development. There are also specific requirements in some units for assessment of these skills where relevant for example where learners are required to undertake real or simulated activities.

The qualification is intended to carry UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses for example: - BSc (Hons) in Nursing - BA (Hons) in Social Work - BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy - BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy - BSc (Hons) in Speech Therapy - BA (Hons) in Health and Social Care.

You will be based at the Lewisham way campus where the Health and social care lessons take place. You will participate in work experience in London and the south east of London.
