This is a technical course aimed at learners who want to work as an employed or self-employed make up and/or skincare counter consultant. You will gain the knowledge and skills you need to consult with clients and provide a range of beauty services including facial treatments and make-up applications, while also developing your understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. You will learn how to instruct clients on product and make-up applications and the principles of retail sales for make-up, cosmetics and perfumery products. At the same time, you'll build your communication, team-working, problem solving and customer service skills, your sustainability awareness and commercial skills ? all of which are valued highly by employers.
You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT and add to your CV by attaining certificates from enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular in the beauty and spa industry. You will also study functional skills or GCSEs in English and maths.

- Four GCSEs (must include English) at grade A*-D/9-3
- Level 1 qualification in a relevant vocational area (desirable but not essential)
You will meet with staff to discuss whether this course is suitable for you and we'll ask you to complete a free writing task to demonstrate an appropriate level of English ability. You may also be required to perform a trade test
You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work, which includes evidence of practical service, throughout the year.
There are three areas of assessment: graded practical assessment (pass, merit or distinction); exams to assess your underpinning knowledge of the skills; and a graded synoptic assessment where you will be observed carrying out a range of services from across all the mandatory units. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years
Aims of the course
To introduce you to a range of professional skills and the underpinning knowledge you need to enter this popular and rapidly expanding industry.
This course leads to employment in a variety of settings including commercial retail environments, commercial salons/day spas and self-employed/mobile work.
While the main purpose of the course of to prepare you for employment, you could also progress on to a specialist qualification at Level 3 in beauty therapy, holistic therapies and/or theatrical & media make up. Having successfully completed this qualification you will be eligible to become a member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT).
Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using industry-recognised tools and products in our fully equipped salon. Our skilled teaching staff will utilise technology such as iPads and television viewing screens to support practical learning, enabling you to view demonstrations and close-up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients at our T'ien salon on campus. There will also be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, as well as competition work.
