Diploma in Hair and Media Make-Up (Level 2) Programme
The hair and beauty curriculum intent at Lewisham College is designed to ensure that it meets the needs of young people in the borough of Lewisham and surrounding residential areas, adults in the communities surrounding Lewisham College and regional employers in the area covered by specialist sectors of national skills shortage.
This course is aimed at learners who wish to pursue a career as an employed or self-employed editorial hairstylist and media make-up artist. Through this qualification, you will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviour to plan for and provide make-up application and hairstyling on models and clients. This will be assessed through your presentation of themed fashion and editorial make-up looks, the styling of both African and European hair types, the application of skin tanning and body painting techniques, and providing eye treatment. You will also develop your knowledge of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety.
You will build your ability to ensure consistency in your make-up application skills and hairstyling services, whilst improving your confidence to network with industry professionals, build on your client base and push your creativity to the limit to produce a total of 10 themed looks for competition work. In parallel, you will improve your planning, communication, and customer service skills, your awareness of current make up trends and your commercial skills- all of which are highly valued by employers and industry professionals such as photographers and models. Throughout the course, there will be opportunities for problem-solving, team working, and developing research skills.
You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT and also add to your CV by gaining certificates from enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular in the hair and beauty industry.
On completion of this course Learners will achieve:
L2 qualification in hair and media makeup English ( Dependent on prior qualification). Maths ( Dependent on prior qualification).
You will also get the opportunity to undertake a work placement which is a compulsory element of the study programme.

You will meet with staff to discuss if this course is suitable for you and we'll ask you to complete a free writing task to demonstrate an appropriate level of English ability.
Please prepare a portfolio of images to showcase your work and produce this at your interview.
There are three methods of assessment: practical observation (where you demonstrate your skills on clients, 29 maximum required or 10 minimum- totally themed looks), oral (where you answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skills), written (where you carry out independent research and complete up to 4 assignments and 8 online exams). During the course, you will build an e-portfolio of work, and you'll receive training on how to use the latest technology to manage this. The program is unit-based, and you will be assessed when you feel you are competent. If you are under 19, regular reports on your progress will be provided to you, parents/guardians.
Aims of the course
To introduce you to a range of professional skills and the underpinning knowledge you need to enter into this exciting industry.
While the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, you could also decide to specialise by taking a level 3 qualification such as Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-up, or Level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make-up studies.
Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using industry-recognised tools and products in our fully equipped salon. Our skilled teaching staff will utilise technology such as iPads and television viewing screens to support practical learning, enabling you to view demonstrations and close-up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients at our T'ien salon on campus. There will also be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, as well as competition work.

You may choose to specialise in theatre, film, print media or photographic studio work, become employed in product manufacturing and training or a make-up counter role, or work in an independent/self-employed/mobile/home based setting.
