Hair & Beauty

This course will launch your career as a beauty therapist, enabling you to work in a beauty salon carrying out treatments and retailing professional product ranges. You may also consider working for yourself as a mobile therapist. This course covers ten units covering facials and skincare, waxing, specialised manicure and pedicure, eye enhancement (tinting, shaping and lashes), make up techniques and employability skills such as personal and professional development, customer service, retail, health & safety in the salon and salon reception skills.

You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT, and add to your CV by attaining certificates from enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular in the beauty industry such as Eve Taylor product knowledge, Airbase make-up, Caflon ear piercing, spray tanning, Gel polish techniques and FX lash effects. You will also study functional skills or GCSEs in English and maths.

Entry Requirements

  • 4 GCSEs D-F / or 3-2 (in 2017 GCSEs)
  • Relevant Level 1 qualification with Merit or above
  • Relevant industry experience to Level 1 or above

    Assessment Method

    You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. You will be using e-portfolios and will be trained how to use the latest technology to manage your portfolio. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years.

    The programme is unit based and is delivered individually at different stages throughout the course. You will be assessed when you feel you are competent.

    There are three areas of assessment:

    • Practical observation: you carry out the skill on clients
    • Oral: you answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skill.
    • Written: you will complete assignments and online exams.

    Aims of the course

    This course will give you the training you need to become a practising Beauty Therapist.

    Progression Opportunities

    Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a junior beauty therapist, learners may choose to develop their skills further by undertaking Technical Level qualifications in beauty therapy at Level 3, including:

    • VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General (QCF)
    • VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy Massage (QCF)
    • VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Studies (QCF)
    • VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy Make-Up (QCF)
    • VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Nail Services (QCF)

    Facilities

    Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using tools and products recognised in the industry. Our skilled staff will utilise technology such as ipads and television viewing screens to support practical learning ensuring that you can view demonstrations and close up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients that book in to visit the T'ien salon. There will be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, and there will be competition work.

    You will be required to purchase a uniform and a kit. All kits are compulsory to attend and achieve the qualification. Further information will be provided on interview.
