This course will enable you to work effectively as a professional make-up artist across a wide range of settings. You will learn advanced techniques in make-up application, specialist camouflage and airbrushing techniques; media, fashion and photographic hair and make-up; and face and body art, while also developing your product knowledge and customer service skills. You will also gain knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety and client care.
You will have the opportunity to undertake a wide range of additional units to enhance your practical skills in hair and make-up application/beauty techniques such as face and body art, prosthetics, styling and fitting postiches, wig services, fantasy hair design, and production arts planning. You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT and add to your CV by attaining certificates from enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular in the hair and beauty industry. You will also study functional skills or GCSEs in English and maths.

You will meet with staff to discuss if this course is suitable for you and we'll ask you to complete a free writing task to demonstrate an appropriate level of English ability.
There are three methods of assessment: practical observation (where you demonstrate your skills on clients), oral (where you answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skills); written (where you carry out independent research and complete an assignment and online exams). During the course you will build an e-portfolio of work, and you'll receive training on how to use the latest technology to manage this. The programme is unit based, and you will be assessed when you feel you are competent.

Aims of the course
To introduce you to a range of professional skills and the underpinning knowledge you need to work in this exciting and rapidly expanding industry.
While the main purpose of this qualification is to prepare you for employment as a make-up artist, you might choose to progress on to further develop your skills by taking a level 4 qualification such as Level 4 Advanced Beauty Therapy.
Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using industry-recognised tools and products in our fully equipped salon. Our skilled teaching staff will utilise technology such as iPads and television viewing screens to support practical learning, enabling you to view demonstrations and close-up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients at our T'ien salon on campus. There will also be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, as well as competition work.

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a make-up artist in a wide range of settings including working in theatre, film, print media or photography studios, at events/shows/exhibitions/carnivals/festivals, or working as an independent/self-employed/mobile make-up artist. You will also be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a make-up artist.
