Financial support

Financial support is out there. Don't be put off from applying.

If you are under 19

Don't be put off applying because you have heard the government is ending the EMA and you are worried about how you are going to cover living costs or pay for books and equipment.

The government is bringing in a new system of support and as soon as we know the details we will post details on our website. Grants of up to £1200 per year are likely to be available for some learners.

You can also talk to one of our guidance officers by calling us on 0800 834 545 or 020 8692 0353.

Some sources of financial help may include:

Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)

If you are under 19, studying full-time and living at home, your parents can claim child benefit and other benefits. If you have to live away from home and no-one supports you, you may be able to claim the benefit for yourself. Visit dwp.gov.uk

If you are over 19

There have been some changes to the rules regarding who pays fees and it depends on the course you are studying and your personal circumstances. If you are on Job Seekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance it is likely you will not need to pay fees.

Some courses are free to all students and others may require a payment of an admin and exam fee only depending on your personal circumstances. In addition there are a range of options to help support you while you are on your course:

Lewisham College

Discretionary Learner Support Funds (Access and Hardship) may be awarded if you need extra help with the costs of studying, including books, travel and materials.

Educational trusts and charities

These organisations can sometimes help full-time students. We can advise you on how to apply for a range of support grants. Visit egas-online.org

Student Finance England

If you are enrolled on a Foundation Degree, HNC or HND you may be eligible for funding through Student Finance England. To apply visit  direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

Jobcentre Plus
