Is this course for me?

This course is for those who are working in a primary or secondary school classroom and who want to gain a formal qualification. It furthers career prospects and opens up opportunities to a more diverse and responsible classroom role.

What will I study?

This course is aimed at recognising and developing the professional status of this important role in schools. You will cover all the key elements needed for this profession, including supporting pupils, colleagues and learning activities, as well as helping with resources and records. You will also address the challenges of the modern classroom by covering the management of pupil behaviour, literacy and numeracy and ICT support. While on the course, you must gain some experience of working at a school for at least two days a week to enable you to gather evidence, addressing all seven units.

Subjects:

  • Contribute to positive relationships
  • Help to Keep Children Safe
  • Provide Displays
  • Provide effective support for your colleagues
  • Provide Support for Learning Activities
  • Support Children's Development
  • Support Literacy and Numeracy Activities

What can I do next?

This can lead to the Teaching Assistants Advanced Certificate NVQ Level 3, or you can begin the process of qualifying as a primary school teacher by joining our Access to Higher Education (Education Studies) course. For more information or to apply for the Supporting Teaching courses please call The Skills People on 0800 977 8748 or visit www.theskillspeople.org

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to have a language and numeracy assessment and interview. Applicants should have taken the Department for Schools Children and Families (DCSF) induction training provided by the LEA, or an appropriate introductory course. If you do not have qualifications in English and/or maths you will be supported in gaining this as part of your course.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence in each unit. Evidence will be gathered from the work place and students are assessed in various ways, including assignments, presentations, projects and classroom observations. Students have access to a personal tutor to discuss progress and to help them plan their studies.

What will it cost?

Course fee: A contribution of £50 from your school

Please note: For courses longer than one year, the fees stated apply to the first year only. These costs are for the academic year 2010-2011 only.
