Is this course for me?

The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) awarded by Canterbury Christ Church University is designed to meet the needs of teachers in further and/or adult and community education and trainers in the public and private sector as well as those working with 14-19 year olds in vocational settings.
This programme incorporates the initial award - Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) required as pre-service training for those entering teaching. The Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) required by those undertaking a limited teaching role and the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) required as a qualification by those with a full teaching role.  There is also a PGCE pathway available in year 2 for graduates.
Guidance concerning the scope of teaching roles and appropriate training level will be given at interview stage.

What will I study?

This course offers practical teacher training leading to fully qualified status. Participants learn to teach on the job, in their work place, supported and guided by a subject specialist mentor and supervised by tutor and employer. The teaching component is delivered over a period of at least 2 years, with evidence being collected through practical work, observations, collaboration with colleagues and personal investigation and reflection. There are eight component units covering planning, preparation, delivery, assessment, management, curriculum development, quality and tutoring:

Subjects: YEAR 1
Module 1 Introduction to Learning and Teaching
Module 2 Planning and Assessing for Learning
Module 3 Theory in Professional Practice
YEAR 2
Module 4 Professional Development
Module 5 Curriculum Studies
Module 6 Professional Investigation

What can I do next?

This can lead to Qualified Teacher in Learning and Skills (QTLS) status and to further Continuing Professional Development in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

What are the entry requirements?

Candidates applying for an initial award will normally possess at least a minimum level three qualification in his/her own area of specialism. A teacher is expected to be vocationally qualified to a minimum of one level above that of the course he/she is teaching on. Applicants must be able to demonstrate at interview their level of literacy, their ability to benefit from the programme and to meet the requirement for 150 hours of teaching for all six modules over the two years. Candidates will need to provide the name of a fully qualified and/or experienced mentor on application. Further guidance on CRB checks, ICT, Literacy and Numeracy Skills requirements is available from course tutors.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by a portfolio of evidence of your delivery and assessment skills and by submission of written and programme task evidence.  Assignments are practical and reflect the activities of a professional associate tutor. Assignments will provide evidence through assessment criteria for the satisfactory achievement of identified professional standards.

Observations of teaching are an important component of the assessment and they are graded by your tutor. You will have regular meetings with your personal tutor and mentor to discuss your progress and to help plan your training. Additional support, help and guidance is also available from the guidance team.
