Important application information

To apply for this course please download and fill in the following Certificate and Diploma in Teaching Application Form and not the online application form.

Is this course for me?

This course is a practical, work-based programme, particularly suitable for vocational teachers. The Diploma in Teaching is the qualification (accredited by LLUK/LSIS) for FULL ROLE teachers, tutors and trainers in the learning and skills sector.  The Diploma is taught over two years.

What will I study?

This course offers practical teacher training leading to fully qualified status. Participants learn to teach on the job, in their work place, supported and guided by a subject specialist mentor and supervised by tutor and employer. The teaching component is delivered over a period of at least 2 years, with evidence being collected through practical work, observations, collaboration with colleagues and personal investigation and reflection. There are eight component units covering planning, preparation, delivery, assessment, management, curriculum development, quality and tutoring: Assessment elements from Units 1 and 2 combine to form the initial Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. In line with LLUK guidance this forms an introductory programme for new teachers, and confers a threshold 'licence' to practice. Units 1 and 2 together form the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector and the remaining units 3 to 8 complete the Diploma.

Subjects:

  • Unit 1 Teaching for Practical Learning I (full year) Level 4
  • Unit 2 Meeting Individual Learners' Needs Level 4
  • Unit 3 Programme Management Level 4
  • Unit 4 Assessment and Feedback for Learning Level 4
  • Unit 5 Teaching for Practical Learning II Level 5
  • Unit 6 Tutoring Level 5
  • Unit 7 Quality Improvement Level 5
  • Unit 8 Action Research Level 5

What can I do next?

This can lead to Qualified Teacher in Learning and Skills (QTLS) status and to further Continuing Professional Development in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to download and complete a special application form. You will need to be employed in a teaching or training capacity with a full range of planning, recruitment, tutoring and administrative responsibilities. You will need to have a professional or vocational qualification at least to Level 3 and you will be invited to attend an interview at the College and take a written English and numeracy assessment. If you do not have Level 2 qualifications in Maths and English, you will be required to gain these qualifications to qualify for ATLS or QTLS. You will also need support from your employer who will need to allocate you an experienced subject specialist mentor to guide and advise you in the delivery of your subject teaching. You will be invited to the College for an interview and written assessment, and will need to give evidence of a recent CRB check.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by a portfolio of evidence of your delivery and assessment skills. Unit assignments are divided into "elements" which are completed and submitted at specified points during the year. Assignments are practical and reflect the activities of a professional associate tutor. Observations of teaching are an important component of the assessment and they are graded. You will have regular meetings with your personal tutor and mentor to discuss your progress and to help plan your training. Additional support, help and guidance is also available from the guidance team.

What will it cost?
