Important application information
To apply for this course please download and fill

Certificate and Diploma in Teaching Application Form and
not the online application form.
Is this course for me?
This course is a practical, work-based programme. The
Certificate in Teaching is the qualification (accredited by
LLUK/LSIS) for "associate teachers". If you are a technician
instructor, or you teach or train on short courses, then this is an
appropriate and recognised qualification for you.
What will I study?
This course offers practical teacher training. Participants
learn to teach on the job, in their work place, supported and
guided by a subject specialist mentor and supervised by tutor and
employer. The teaching component is delivered over a whole year,
with evidence being collected through practical work, observations,
collaboration with colleagues and personal reflection. There are
two component units: Unit 1 Teaching for Practical Learning
I and Unit 2 Meeting Individual Learners' Needs. These units
cover the essentials of induction, assessing learners' needs,
lesson preparation and planning, addressing individual learners
needs - including skills for life, professional responsibilities
and assessment. The units also offer participants the opportunity
to address their own requirements in supporting the skills for life
needs of their learners. Assessment elements from Units 1 and 2
combine to form the initial Award in Preparing to Teach in the
Lifelong Learning Sector. In line with LLUK guidance this forms an
introductory programme for new teachers, and confers a threshold
'licence' to practice. Similarly, Units 1 and 2 together form a
Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector. This is a
potential exit point from the programme for those working in an
'associate teacher' role as defined by LLUK.
Subjects:
- Unit 1 Teaching for Practical Learning I
- Unit 2 Meeting Individual Learners' Needs
What can I do next?
This can lead to the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong
Learning Sector and eventually, Qualified Teacher in the Learning
and Skills Sector (QTLS) status.
This can lead to employment in:
Teaching and training in the post-compulsory sector
What are the entry requirements?
You will need to
download and complete a special application form. You
will need to be employed in a teaching or training capacity.
You will need to have a professional or vocational qualification at
least to Level 3 and you will be invited to attend an interview at
the College and take a written English and numeracy assessment. If
you do not have Level 2 qualifications in Maths and English, you
will be required to gain these qualifications to qualify for ATLS.
You will also need support from your employer who will need to
allocate you an experienced subject specialist mentor to guide and
advise you in the delivery of your subject teaching. You will be
invited to the College for an interview and written assessment, and
will need to give evidence of a recent CRB check.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is by a portfolio of evidence of your delivery and
assessment skills. Unit assignments are divided into "elements"
which are completed and submitted at specified points during the
year. Assignments are practical and reflect the activities of a
professional associate tutor. Observations of teaching are an
important component of the assessment and they are graded. You will
have regular meetings with your personal tutor to discuss your
progress and to help plan your training. Additional support, help
and guidance is also available from the guidance team.
What will it cost?
