Our focus on Popular Music draws in students from all communities and helps them develop and realise their potential.

The community we serve has a wide range of music at its heart. Hip Hop and Grime rub shoulders with Indie, Punk, Metal and Reggae. As a department we aim to connect with all these styles.

Through a combination of lecturers active in the industry, a high level of teaching expertise and industry standard equipment, we give learners the best start they can have in today's commercial music world.

Our courses are also a great preparation for further study. 50% of our students progress to Higher Education and with plans to develop our own Foundation Degree, we offer a clear pathway to all areas of music employment.

George Wilkins - Music Tutor/Composer

George Wilkins Music TutorIn late 2009, I was asked by Harvey Goldsmith / Ignite productions (producers of Live 8) to compose music for the FIFA Club World Cup. The competition featuring the world's best club teams was held in Abu Dhabi and was won by FC Barcelona.

Colleagues on the show had previously directed numerous high profile events, including ceremonies for the Beijing-London Olympics handover, the Athens Olympics, the Commonwealth Games and Tina Turner's world tour.

My music for the opening and closing ceremonies and goal celebrations was broadcast worldwide; it was composed to celebrate the host nation's rich Emirati heritage and the cultures of the competing nations.

This is the highest profile piece of live work I've done for a while but I've also produced lot of music for commercials, corporate videos and TV.

I'm in a good position to teach my students about that aspect of the industry ; the job covered a huge range of experiences I can pass on to them including how to compose to a specific brief, hit deadlines under pressure and register your work to receive broadcast royalties.

All the staff in the music department have done high profile work in the past including writing and playing on two number one hits!

You can see part of the opening ceremony on YouTube. The main music kicks in at about 1min 30 seconds - enjoy!

Lidia Ghebrehiwot - Music Technology, Level 3

Lidia GhebrehiwotIt was music that brought me to Lewisham College and to London. I was going to school in Germany, but was in England on holiday when I saw an advert at a bus stop for Lewisham College's music course.

At the time I was doing classical and jazz singing at school in Germany, but I was looking to do something more contemporary. I applied for Lewisham College, got in, and moved here.

It was a big change for me. The support I got from the teachers and guidance department was amazing.

When I first arrived, I was just a singer. Lewisham College inspired me to do more, and now I'm a producer as well after taking Music Technology this year. Now I can do my own backing tracks, and I've written various tracks for theatre performances. I've also played at the Festival Theatre with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Next year I hope to go on to Westminster University to study Music Technology and Business. In the future, I'd love to have my own record label, and just be involved in the entertainment industry.

Music in general is such a big part of my life. It's what I love doing anyway, but the way we're taught here is so inspiring, it makes studying music even better.

Since I've come to Lewisham College my whole life has changed.
