Is this course for me?

If you have an interest in digital media - interactive design, 2D and 3D gaming, web design, multimedia and animation and think that you might want to study it at a higher level then this course would be an ideal place to start. Students who are successful may be able to progress onto a Degree.

What will I study?

This course will allow you to develop techniques and skills such as game design, web design, 2D and 3D animation, interactive media, DVD / Web authoring, sound in interactive media, motion capture, digital graphics, using cameras,  visual story telling, working in teams, managing projects, working to briefs, understanding the industry, analysing and testing designs.  This will enable you to pursue a career in the industry or go on to further study. Applications and packages studied on industry standard equipment include:

Adobe Creative Suite 4: Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Fireworks, After Effects, Dreamweaver and Premiere

Autodesk Entertainment Creation Pack: 3DS Max, Maya, Softimage, MotionBuilder and Mudbox

Final Cut Pro 7: including Sound track Pro and Motion 4

What can I do next?

This can lead to entry level jobs in the digital and interactive media industry are usually available after gaining a degree.  If you decide not to go to university then you may be able to gain employment in related areas such as:

  • Website design
  • Animation
  • Gaming
  • Interactive design

What are the entry requirements?

You do not need prior experience but an interest in a broad range of digital media is essential. You will be asked to both discuss and write about parts of the media industry. You need to enjoy working with others, have creative ideas and an open mind to learning different techniques, skills and technical use of equipment. You will need to attend College for an interview and be able to demonstrate an interest in the media.  If you have a portfolio of work this would be good to bring to show at interview. You also need one of the following: a BTEC First Diploma in Media at Merit or above and/or four GCSEs grades A-C, and a reference from previous academic courses.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is in various ways including assignments, class work, projects, and examinations. You will also have regular meetings with your personal tutor to discuss your progress and to help plan your studies.

What will it cost?

If you are under 19 and a home student, in most circumstances, you don't pay any fees. However, you will need to find this out when you apply.
