Is this course for me?

This course suits those interested in engineering related employment and/or those who wish to study at a higher level after completing this course.

What will I study?

A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work related course.  This challenging new programme has been developed with employers to provide you with the skills and experience you will need to succeed. As well as developing an understanding of the theory behind engineering, students will develop an ability to solve problems both individually and as part of a team. The course provides learning tailored to what interests you most with an opportunity to learn from professionals working in their chosen field. As well as learning in the classroom you will spend time in a workshop which provides an environment comparable to the workplace.

Compulsory subjects

There are the following compulsory subjects:

  • Working Safely and Effectively in Engineering
  • Interpreting and Using Engineering Information

Mathematics for Engineering Technicians

Optional subjects

There are numerous options all which compliment all aspects of engineering, so whatever you decide there are sufficient units to help you in your career.  Just come and speak to us,  However a typical pathway could include;

  • Electronic circuit construction and testing
  • Computer aided design for technicians
  • Programming CNC machines
  • Engineering materials
  • Secondary material removal using machines (lathe/mill etc.)

What can I do next?

BTEC National Award in Engineering, BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or manufacturing Engineering or BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering. With further training or education, you may progress into careers including: electrical installations, electronics, computing, machining, computer aided design, control systems engineering.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade D or above in Maths, Science and English or equivalent vocational qualification, and an aptitude for Computing/Engineering.

What will it cost?

If you are under 19 and a home student, in most circumstances, you don't pay any fees. However, you will need to find this out when you apply.
