Is this course for me?

This course is for those with an interest in and commitment to engineering. This course is an ideal 'taster' of engineering for those thinking about an apprenticeship. The curriculum covers both electrical installation and mechanical engineering.

What will I study?

This course explores current and future engineering practices and provide the foundation requirements of an apprenticeship and other national training programmes.

Subjects:

  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment
  • Using and communicating technical information

These are optional subjects:

  • Fitting using hand skills
  • Machining engineering materials
  • Wiring and testing electrical circuits

What can I do next?

This can lead to further education at the college (studying part-time whilst employed as a trainee/apprentice in electrical and/ or mechanical engineering). Lewisham College has an excellent reputation in courses at this level and our students have progressed to higher education, HNC/HND or degrees.

This can lead to employment in:

  • Mechanical engineering services industry
  • Apprenticeship /Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Electrical engineering
  • Electrical installation

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to sit an aptitude test for technical study and demonstrate a high level of skill and interest in engineering as a career.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through practical assignments and externally set short answer examinations. Students will meet regularly with their personal tutor to discuss progress and to plan their studies. Additional support, help and guidance is also available from the Guidance Team or from our Study Buddies.

What will it cost?

If you are under 19 and a home student, in most circumstances, you don't pay any fees. However, you will need to find this out when you apply.
