This new qualification
combines academic study with practical experience and is designed
to equip young people for the fast changing world they are growing
up in.
The Diploma has been developed by schools and colleges working
closely with employers and universities and will offer learners
integrated programmes of study in real work related settings. The
Diploma will require learners to achieve a minimum standard in
English, Maths and IT, complete a project and a minimum of 10 days
work experience.
The Diploma will eventually cover 17 different subjects, or
Lines of Learning, and will be available across the country by 2013
to learners from age 14.
In each Line of Learning the Diploma will be available at
different levels:
- Foundation Level equivalent to up to 5 GCSEs
- Higher Level equivalent to up to 7 GCSEs
- Advanced level equivalent to 3-4 AS levels
Lewisham College is working with local schools to offer the
Diploma to learners at KS4 and full time to learners aged
16-19.

On completion of the Diploma, learners can study at the next
level, take a different type of qualification or an Apprenticeship.
An Advanced Diploma can lead to a place at University or
employment.
