Lewisham College signs the Sports Charter

Principal Maxine Room has signed Lewisham College up to the
Sports Charter condemning homophobia and transphobia in sport. The
Sports Charter is an intiative looking to eradicate bigotry in
sport in 2012, the Olympic year. Launched by the Government
Equalities Office, it has attracted some high profile supporters
like tennis champion Billie Jean King and longtime Norwich City
season ticket holder Stephen Fry.
In a ceremony attended by members of various groups around the
College looking to fight homophobia, including the College's Sexual
Orientation Working Group, the Principal spoke to those present
before formally signing the charter. "It's important that colleges
provide support so that more young sportsmen and women can flourish
as who they truly are, so I'm proud to sign this charter and commit
Lewisham College to eradicating homophobia and transphobia in sport
- and everywhere else," said the Principal. The charter will be
framed and displayed in the Fastrack Fitness Centre in the
College's Sport department with additional copies displayed around
the College.
