Lewisham College Offers a Unique Lifeline To NEETs

Lewisham College is offering young people currently Not in
Employment, Education or Training (NEETs) a unique lifeline as
statistics released today by the Office of National Statistics show
the number of NEETs in England hitting a record high.
Lewisham College is responding to today's statistics in addition
to the Borough's high youth unemployment rates by continuing to
enrol students up until Easter with the aim of encouraging more
young people into further education.
Young people aged 16-18 can still take up places on the
College's Youth Entry to Further Education (YEFE) course, specially
designed for people who have been out of education for a while and
are looking for a route back in.
Tim Potter, Vice Principal of Learner Experience at Lewisham
College said: "It's vital that young people and their parents or
carers are aware of the opportunities that are available. We don't
just take people on in September - we're working as hard as we can
to ensure there are places available for young people who are
currently NEET. YEFE is a great way back into education - and
a gateway to a real range of courses that we offer at the
College."
Godfirst Iwerreh is one student who initially studied on the
College's YEFE course. "YEFE's a good course, I'd definitely
recommend it," says Godfirst, "it gives you the experience you need
to apply to other courses. I'm now studying Business BTEC Level 2 -
which YEFE really prepared me for. In the future, I want to go and
study Business at university and then go into banking."
