Lewisham College Hosts 10x10 Art Project

10x10What is an object worth to you? How much do you want it and how much are you prepared to give in return?

10 x 10 is a display featuring one hundred priceless objects. They may not be diamonds or Rolex watches, but they all have a real value for local artist Kate Murdoch who has been displaying them at the Lewisham Way campus of Lewisham College.

This month, these treasured objects went be up for grabs. Students and staff had the opportunity to take an item if they left something else in its place.

Kate Murdoch first displayed 10 x 10 at Deptford X festival. She said: "10 x 10 was inspired by the North American pack rat, a rodent which has a habit of leaving objects behind in place of things it takes.

"I know how 10 x 10 works in a studio, but galleries attract a certain audience. Lewisham College is a young, multicultural, funky place bringing it here is all about making art more accessible.

"10 x 10 is about moving on from emotion, whether it be good or bad. You can't keep all that clutter with you, emotionally or physically."

Lewisham College student Stewart Stringer swapped a ring for a mug in the display. "The ring is from my first relationship. It symbolises the idealism that you attach to your first love. I'm taking the mug because I think it's something I'll actually use."

Fellow student Tricia Marshall left behind a Lindt chocolate bunny. "I've given up chocolate for Lent, so it's really hard for me to leave this bunny behind - I love chocolate, and this is my favourite kind. It's very more-ish. I'm taking a tape measure away with me, because I'm a practical sort of person."

Staff member, Steve Curran took a bone china cup from the display and replaced it with a bicycle repair set. "I'm collecting cups for my wedding," explains Steve, "we're going to give them away as wedding favours. I left my bicycle repair kit, and it's the only one I've got so I hope I don't get a puncture on the way home because the only thing I'll have to repair it with is a china cup."
