Mayor of Lewisham visits the GROW Project
Supported Learning students involved with the GROW Project
received a special visitor on Monday: the Mayor of Lewisham, Sir
Steve Bullock. Sir Steve came to the Ladywell Centre to meet with
GROW project organiser David Glover, adult participants in the GROW
Project as well as Lewisham College students from the Access to
Horticulture course.
"This presses a lot of buttons for Lewisham: the importance of
growing food in our community and helping everybody in the borough,
especially people with learning disabilities," said Sir Steve.
"We've been here for three years," said Tina Mangar, a tutor at
Lewisham College's Supported Learning department. "Originally there
was just a mound, and we had to level it out. We've also built a
poly tunnel to help our plants grow quicker. The project teaches
transferable skill and it also provides experience and develops
leadership among people with a learning disability."
Sir Steve met with intrepid reporter and Horticulture student
Steven Whittle-Quinn and also posed for a picture with the entire
Access to Horticulture group before planting a tree in the garden
to commemorate the day. "I look forward to returning in a year's
time," the Mayor said.
