Former Dance Student Performs At Barbican

Former Lewisham College Dance student turned professional dancer
Seke Chimutengwende is to star in an exciting new exhibition at the
Barbican.
Seke will perform in Laurie Anderson, Trisha Brown, Gordon
Matta-Clark: Pioneers of the Downtown Scene, New York 1970s which
is scheduled to run for 10 weeks.
Seke began his career in dance at Lewisham College, studying
Foundation Dance before going on to study at The Place. Since
graduating, Seke has travelled the world, working with top dance
companies including DV8 as well as having a successful career as an
improvisation teacher.
Seke still thinks fondly of his time at Lewisham College,
saying: "At Lewisham College I really enjoyed dancing every day. I
was given a high dosage injection of dance that just kick started
everything. Dance was everything, and you just immersed yourself in
it.
"Lewisham College definitely did prepare me for going on to The
Place, and for other things I've done since. The teaching's really
inspiring, the teachers are really passionate about dance and
that's quite encouraging.
"If I was to give any advice to current or future Lewisham
College dance students I'd say find out what your individual
strengths and interests are and develop them. And talk to people:
go to shows and workshops and meet other dancers - it's the main
way you hear about things and get offered work."
Seke's encouraging current Lewisham College dance students as
well as anyone else with an interest in dance to see his latest
performance at the Barbican. He said: "It's a really good show,
it's quite unusual and experimental - people should definitely come
and see it!"
