Construction learner wins yet another award

Kerri Chambers, Construction student, was at the Houses of
Parliament last month to receive the award for runner up in the
2011 Young Builder of the Year Awards presented by Youthbuild UK.
It's just one of many awards Kerri has won, as she was the Olympic
Delivery Authority's Apprentice of the Year, and then became the
first woman ever to win a Senior SkillBuild event, emerging
victorious in bricklaying at the London Senior SkillBuild
competition.
Kerri wasn't fazed by the ceremony, having already met the
Queen and Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the Olympics site where
she worked for Galostar on the Olympic Stadium. "It was a really
good day. The best part was being able to talk to people like Paul
Chandler of Skanska. He promised to keep in touch - I was
networking," Kerri said. For John White, Curriculum Manager of the
Construction Department at Lewisham College, Kerri is not just a
pioneer, she's a future leader. "Kerri is an inspiration, not to
just women but all young construction learners. I like to believe
Kerri is the new face of the construction industry."
What's in Kerri's future? She's continuing to work at Galostar
and she's also setting her eyes on competing at WorldSkills in
2012, having just missed out on this year's competition at the O2.
She's studying for a BTEC in Building Services having already
completed an NVQ3 in Brickwork, and she's not stopping there. "I
want to get as far as I can, right up to the top. I don't know
where I'll end up, but I want to know everything I can!"
