Build a greenhouse - with bottles?!
The group set up a campaign to collect
1,500 recycled plastic drinks bottles by putting large recycling
bins on each site, and displaying posters asking everyone to
donate.
Devante Crooks from Haberdashers Askes said "I really enjoyed
designing the posters and advertising to make sure we could collect
enough bottles."
As well as having the opportunity to practice their building
skills, students had some challenges to overcome to make sure the
greenhouse would be fit for purpose. No foundations could be laid,
and it needed to be put up in an area that has easy access and a
lot of sun.
The horticulture students requested a wide entrance door and
enough space for several people to work inside together. An extra
special touch was added. The letters 'LC' (for Lewisham College)
was built into the roof in green bottles, "it looked wicked" said
Patrick Adams of Sedgehill.
"The final greenhouse is great. It will make a lovely
feature in the garden and the students will make good use of it"
said Paula McAlpine Horticulture Course Tutor.
It said it all when Lee Wade from Bacons College commented
"Looking forward to another project, I enjoyed this one so
much."
