From Deptford to Deutschland
2 June 2011
This summer a group of 16 Lewisham College Construction students
are jetting to Germany to take part in an exciting two week
exchange programme.
As part of an ongoing European collaboration that's lasted for
more than a decade, the students will visit a vocational college in
Berlin from 12-25 June 2011 where they will get hands on experience
renovating the college building and learning new site skills.
Students from Berlin will then visit Lewisham College in the
autumn.
As well as having the opportunity to practise their practical
skills, the students will also have time for some sightseeing and
cultural visits.
The Deptford students come from a variety of different
construction backgrounds including carpentry, bricklaying, welding,
BTEC construction and painting and decorating, and are currently
learning basic German ahead of their trip.
Lewisham College Construction tutor, Erika Gaidule, who will be
joining the students on the trip, said: "It's an excellent
opportunity for the students to develop skills in different areas
of construction and to get some international work experience on
their CVs."
Painting and Decorating student Sophia Brown is one of four
girls to be going on the trip and she will have the chance to show
off her skills by redecorating the German Principal's office. She
said: "I'm really excited about the trip: I think it's going to be
a good experience. I'm looking forward to seeing how they do things
abroad, using different materials and seeing all of the different
architecture that's out there."
