Lewisham College Beauty apprentice Doanh La kicked off the College's Apprenticeship Week celebrations in style as she took home the trophy for Xcel Fashion, Hair and Beauty Student of the Year at Xcel Magazine's annual student awards ceremony.

The Student of the Year Awards recognised the achievements of learners nationwide at a prestigious gala dinner held in central London. Beauty apprentice Doanh, who works at Naveeda Salon in Ilford, was the only student from a further education college to be given an award among students from universities from across Britain.

Luke Turnell, Director of SR Media and Publisher of Xcel called the winners a "truly remarkable group of people".

Doanh received her trophy from sponsors LCBT and TV presenter Konnie Huq. She thanked her tutors and the College for helping her to win her award, adding: "I was very surprised to win this award. It's a shame I couldn't enjoy the food though - I've just had braces fitted!"

Principal of Lewisham College Maxine Room, who was on hand to see Doanh collect her award, said: "The whole College is delighted that Doanh's received this award - she's an outstanding student who deserves to be recognised and celebrated. It's Lewisham College's mission to create successful futures, and I think that Doanh's future looks very bright indeed."
