Basketball programme is a slam dunk

Lewisham College has started a basketball team to compete alongside the College's successful football team. The basketball programme, which began play this month, will compete across London and Kent with players who will be studying towards a BTEC National Diploma, allowing them opportunities to play university basketball in the United States.

America's style of play is important to coach Anthony Dias, who will be coaching his players in the fast, physical style of American basketball. "I grew up idolising Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, and I want to teach our players the style of play they see in US colleges and the NBA", he says. He'll be instituting an American feel to the programme. Dias, who will be assisted by former Great Britain international Joel Moore, believes he will better prepare his players for opportunities professionally in Europe and in US universities. "I'd love our players to play in Europe or attend university in the US, and if they are prepared for that style of play, they'll be likelier to succeed."
