What kind of support is available?FAQs

Our teachers do everything they can to make sure you reach your full potential.   Every student gets a personal tutor, someone you can call on whenever they need any extra help.  Our Access Team provide support for any student who has a disability. We also provide sign language interpreters, information in large print or Braille and support for those with dyslexia.

What opportunities are there for work or university? 

We have lots of links with local businesses including Charlton Athletic, South East London Chamber of Commerce, and the London Metropolitan Police, with many of our courses requiring students to go out on work placements giving them valuable experience in the work place. 

What success has Lewisham College seen?

Lewisham College is one of the most successful further education colleges in England.  We have been rated as 'outstanding' in a recent Ofsted inspection, and our success rates reflect this.  This year around 300 of our students have gone on to study at higher education, studying at universities such as Greenwich University, Ravensbourne College, Imperial College and Cambridge.  One of our dance students received one of 40 places at the world renowned London Contemporary Dance School.  Other students have been able to gain employment with a range of different companies including Lewisham Council, Bloomberg, Arab Emirates Airline, and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hyde Park.

What is the culture like?

Lewisham College is an exciting, vibrant and caring college, with 15,000 plus students, reflecting the diverse local community.  There's always lots going on and lots of support available, with students being able to take part in various activities, clubs and events.

How safe is Lewisham College?

We take wellbeing and safety extremely seriously.  Our procedures mean that everyone feels safe when attending College. Our staff are appropriately recruited and trained so that we can take immediate action should there ever be any issues.  There's just one entrance into College so we know exactly who is on campus at all times. We maintain a 'zero tolerance' drugs policy and smoking is only allowed in designated areas of our campuses.

What happens when I finish my course?

We can continue to support you whether you want to carry on studying at Lewisham College or progress onto higher education or work.  Our Jobs and Careers service provides advice and training on preparing CVs, interview practice and advice about applying to university. Even if you go on to work or study at university, you can still come to us for advice and support via our GURU service.

Are there places to pray?

We have five prayer rooms split across our two campuses - three for women and two for men. The prayer rooms are available for students of all faiths. In addition we have two chaplains who come to the college each week. They are available for any students who wish to pray, be listened to, discuss any issues of faith or be signposted to centres of worship.

When does enrolment start?

Enrolment will start on from Tuesday 28th August until Friday 7 September 2012.  This year, we will also be enrolling on Saturday 1 September.

When do the courses start?

Many of our courses will begin in September 2012, with some starting in January 2013 also.  When you enrol onto your course, you will be given a copy of your timetable that will tell you which day you will start College.

How long will my course be?

Duration of courses can vary from one day to two years. The length of each course will be stated at the top of each course information page.

Will I have to come into College everyday?

This will depend on the type of course you are doing and the number of hours you will be studying per week.  The number of hours per week will be stated at the top of each course information page.  When you enrol, you will receive a copy of your timetable that will tell you which days you will be coming in to College.
