Since its incorporation in 1993, Lewisham College has been fully
responsible for its own management and administration. The
Principal and senior managers report to an unpaid governing body
made up of representatives from local businesses and the local
community. The Governing Body operates within the legislative
framework of the Learning and Skills Act 2000 and the Further and
Higher Education Act 1992.
Our Governors - Excellent, Representative Governance
In the last inspection in 2006 the College was awarded Grade 1
in the audit of Governance and Financial Management systems, and a
Grade 1 by Ofsted for Leadership, which included praise for
Governors' rigorous and positive contribution to college life. They
were also commended for their skilful and consultative strategic
planning, and Equality of Opportunity was said to be the
'lifeblood' of the College.
The Governing Body
The College governors, who are all volunteers, are drawn from
the community, coming from a range of occupations. Some are
appointed directly by the Governing Body, and some are elected by
the staff and students of the College.
The role of the Governing Body is in agreeing the strategic
direction of the College, setting objectives and monitoring
results, and supporting the college to provide a high quality and
effective learning experience.
The Governing Body meets four times a year, and has six
Committees:
- Audit
- Finance and Estates
- Human Resources
- Remuneration
- Search and Governance
- Quality
The Student Forum chaired by the Student Governors ensures that
the Governing Body keeps in touch with the students.
The Governing Body's role is strategic, and members do not
involve themselves in the day to day management of the College.
