Lewisham College celebrated Black History Month throughout October to commemorate, raise awareness and mark the contributions, culture, history and achievements of Black people in the UK and across the world.
Asfa Sohail, Principal at Lewisham College, said: “We are proud to celebrate Black History Month and to remember and value the importance of Black people by highlighting their positive impact in creating a modern and diverse Britain.
“This celebration provides us with an opportunity to continue promoting our commitment to inclusion, equality and diversity within the College and local community to ensure we provide a safe and welcoming environment to our staff, students and partners.”
During October, the College set up a scheme to recommend and lend relevant books and films to students, to acknowledge and commemorate Black history and culture, and its impact on society, including titles and films such as Homecoming: Voices of the Windrush generation, Hidden Figures and Malcolm X.
Students were also given access to resources such as many short videos, podcasts and documentaries on the College’s e-learning platform.
