Lewisham College held its annual Student Awards 2019 on Thursday 20 June, celebrating the hard work and dedication of our learners who have ‘gone the extra mile’.

The Awards were given to students who have achieved highly in their studies or on their apprenticeships in the workplace, as well as those who have made a real difference to the lives of others either at the College or in the local community. Many of the award-winning students have had to overcome significant barriers in order to succeed.

The event, which took place at Lewisham Way, brought together students and their families, staff, governors and special guests, and was an inspiring evening of celebration, entertainment and community spirit.

After a welcome from Curriculum Manager Sharon Muncie, who compered the evening, Vicky Foxcroft MP took to the stage and spoke to guests about the role of education and the local community in improving the lives of young people and adults alike, and the importance of celebrating their achievements.

The Awards were presented by Principal Asfa Sohail who said: “Although we recognise and celebrate our students all year round, it is so important to have this occasion at the end of an academic year to look back on what has been achieved.”

She also spoke about the positive recent changes which have happened at the College, including becoming a stand-alone institution once again, having previously been part of Lewisham Southwark College, in order to focus on the needs of the community it serves.

“Since then, we have worked tirelessly with local authorities and partners to align our curriculum offer to what is needed,” she said. “At the same time, we are increasing our success – our achievement rate for all qualifications is now 90%, placing us ahead of competitors locally and number three in London.”

During the evening, guests enjoyed a special performance by music students from our sister institution Southwark College. The band - Karmafix - had just completed a Foundation Degree in Music and were looking forward to a summer of live performances.

The Lewisham College Student Awards 2019 were sponsored by organisations including Brandz, CIS Security, FE Associates, FE Week, Masons Kitcken and Morgan Hunt.
