Hospitality and Catering students at Lewisham College proudly returned from their work experience placements last week, managing to put all the skills and theory they’ve learnt into practice.

Lewisham College can claim a strong record in preparing young people for the pressure and tight deadlines of a modern restaurant kitchen. As a result, many of the finest London establishments are keen to play host to students on placement, because they know they’ll be ready for the challenge.

  • Acacia and Dervis worked at Aster in Westminster
  • Jordan at Butler’s Wharf Chop House
  • Tenisha and Shaynah – Pont de Tour by Tower Bridge
  • Mohib – German Gymnasium restaurant in Kings Cross
  • Wilson – New Street Warehouse, near Liverpool Street
  • Nam – Plateau in Canary Wharf
  • Shanay – Skylon at the Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank

Loretta Turner, Progress Tutor, says: “Our students were a little anxious about going into their placements, as these are very prestigious organisations. However, they quickly settled into work, and really enjoyed being challenged by the time pressures, and learning how to put together some beautiful dishes, and desserts.”

“The feedback from employers was very positive – they were impressed by the self-discipline our students were demonstrating throughout their time with the businesses.”

Quality work experience placements are absolutely key for when the students complete their course, as it will show that they can operate successfully in a professional kitchen. The ability to work as part of a close-knit team can be evidenced through their work in their placement too.
